Houston, TX.

It is a sunny Houstonian afternoon, and fryers burn hot flames in the small compressed kitchen within the truck. Daniel Caballero and his crew are not thinking about the issues beyond the parameters of the Good Dog Food Truck as they flip sausages and bread buns.

It is hot outside and a few customers wait under the shadow provided by the trees aligned neatly at the Menil Collection parking lot. Regardless of the fact that there is no sitting, customers come here every week for a good dose of their favourite gourmet Hot Dog.

“I love the The Guac-a-dog” I hear a customer say to the other as they stand in line reading the menu.

The Guac-a-dog is a gourmet hot dog garnished with guacamole, cilantro, tomatoes, jalapenos and onions. It is one of the most popular “dogs” at the Good Dog.

“I come here all the time” a student from the University of St. Thomas, said.

“The hot dogs are very tasty and the place looks clean”

And I agree, the Good Dog Food truck looks clean. Their crew is always helpful and respectful, and you can even pay with your debit or credit card since they have the modern Ipad app that allows business access to mobile paying without the need of cash.

I went for the uncomplicated and traditional “Good Dog” which is a simple old style hot dog garnished with the sauce of your choice. Tangy, fresh, homemade ketchup is on offer, alongside with other homemade sauces. The delightful combination of the buttered, slightly grilled bread bun with the gourmet fat sausage served with the tangy ketchup is an explosion to your taste buds and I am instantly hooked.

So next time you are around the Montrose area and pass along the Menil, don’t hesitate to try. I can assure you, you wont be disappointed!
