October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month!

October is here! and that means cooler temperatures,  football season, pumpkin and spice, a shower of oranges and yellows leaves, and of course Halloween! I love October!

Many people don’t know that October is also Down Syndrome Awareness Month! yes that’s it! it is the month we celebrate all of those great individuals with an Extra Chromosome, which makes them Extra special and Extra loving.

20131007-090914.jpgDown syndrome is a genetic condition in which a person has 47 chromosomes instead of the usual 46. One in every 691 babies in the United States is born with Down syndrome, and there are more than 400,000 people living with Down syndrome in the United States. If you are in Houston (and even if you aren’t) here are some things happening in October for Down Syndrome Awareness.

Oct 15- Gymboree all members 0-7 yrs old are welcome!

Oct 22- Baby massage,  a representative will  show mommies how to massage their babies, and moms can come and drink coffee and talk to other moms.

Oct. 29- Halloween Pumpkin Celebration! Spooktacular or what! opened to ALL ages, visit the  haunted house, carve your own pumpkin and play along with friends and family.

Oct 4 – BuddyWalk tshirt day, or the wear blue for DS awareness (if you don’t have the BuddyWalk shirt)

Oct 11- BuddyWalk tshirt day- and also do the crazy socks day! Wear you craziest, most colourful socks and share your picture on social media. Make sure to tag the Down Syndrome Association of Houston and use #DSAM2013

Oct 18 – BuddyWalk tshirt day- and also  Bowtie Friday. You know you want to! bow ties are cool! Take a pic, make it a fashion statement at the office or school and share your picture online using #DSAM2013

Oct 25 – BuddyWalk tshirt day- and also show some ExtraLove on this ExtraDay (as in extra chromosome) wear and X or yellow t-shirt day.

Oct 10 – Buddy Walk 101 – what to expect, forms and general information presented by Alejandra Lima, Houston Buddy Walk Director.

Oct 17 – Special Needs Planning information. How to fund a “good quality of life” for your loved one with Down syndrome presented by Rosa Clay from Prudential.

Oct 24 – Speech 101 – what can you do at home to help your loved one with Ds develop their speech presented by Ann P. Fontenot, Speech Language Pathologist.
